Masters 2 - match report 2/5/2012

Devonport masters top team finished at the head of the Masters 2 division after the first round despite going down 9-5 to North Shore (or Devonport B as they have become known) last night.
In another shock result Henderson lost 9-4 to the other North Shore side, gifting Devonport first round honors by one point.
First up was Dietmar 'Lethal" Londer making a gradual comeback from injury. He found the going pretty tough on a cold night and went down 3-0 to Alvin Maharaj.
The icy conditions suited Rob 'where is his mind' Drent who cut up Jim Milne 3-0 for a 5 wins two loses interclub record in the first round.
Bruce 'the ref" Stewart was back on form questioning calls, cursing the mother of his dead dog and various other spots of colorful repartee. However he failed to fire himself up totally and looked a bit rusty at times going down to Dave Wright 3-2.
Bring on the John McEnroe-like drinki trolley destruction in the second round.
Ryan "wrecking ball" Quinn had the toughest assignment against tournament hardened Damon Lord who is temporarily helping out North Shore. Damon was in great mistake-free form, with almost perfect length and touch which didn't leave Ryan much to play with and Damon cleaned up 3-0. Still a great round for Ryan winning 6 out of 7 games.
There is a break next week for some reason so our next game is against Silverdale at Remuera on 16/5/12. Let me know if you can't make it.
Maybe we could have a hit down the club next wednesday instead.

Masters 2 Match Report 25 April

Devonport masters top side is clinging to the share of the lead of the masters 2 competition after losing to Henderson 8-7 last week.

Ryan "wrecking ball" Quinn continued his impressive unbeaten run with a 3-2 win over the determined campaigner Tony Taffard, who scrapped right to the end.

Rob "where is his mind" Drent tired and slightly injured from his non-heroics at the Auckland champs continued his slide down the grading list with a 3-1 loss to Jeff McCollum although he lost the fourth game 20-18.

Nick "squash guru" Griffiths made short work of Apa Fatiolofa, a surprisingly easy win as Apa had been playing good squash this year after losing a lot of weight.
Bruce 'the ref" Stewart was on his best behavior and agreed with virtually every call in his 3-0 loss to Mike Taffard. Perhaps Bruce needs to fire up to the glory days of old where he was so vocal he was actually reffing all four courts.

New BlogEntry

Masters 2 Match Report 4 April 12

Nick "squash guru" Griffiths is officially a B1 for the first time after his 3-0 victory over Tony Staub last night set the tone for a 12-0 drubbing of Remuera by Devonport in Master's 2.
We are now leading the competition by eight points after only 4 rounds - surprising all pundits.
However it was Nick's night . With no obvious nerves he worked to a game plan against Tony - lots of hard driving straight and cross court to nullify his opponents skills long reach and skills in the middle. Getting to B1 is difficult - Nick has been within 60 points of B1 for the last five years. So well done and rumor has it Lesley might buy him a lemonade to celebrate. Come to think of it Nick its time to shout your loyal team mates!
Next up was Ryan 'wrecking ball' Quinn who outclassed Ian Gunthorp despite Ian's old master's tricks and gamesmanship. Ryan could have easily dropped the last game and shows his greatly improved form this year as he lost to Ian in 2011 in a controversial guns at dawn tournament showdown.
Bruce 'the ref" Stewart also dealt to his opponent George Hovarth with ease 3-0. He reckons he has been playing like a girl so threatened to wear a thong last night. No-one was keen on checking.
Rob "where is his mind" Drent also accounted for Brian Francis 3-0 but had trouble with his boasts early on. Rob has won his first four interclub games of the season so may go in a tournament next week to make sure his points even out.
So a great start to the season - but next week against Brown's Bay at North Shore will be a struggle with a few team members away on holiday.
But it does mark the return of our secret weapon - Dietmar 'lethal' Londer!

Masters 2 - Match Report

Devonport Masters 1 is top of the mens 2 division after a brilliant 12-3 win over Silverdale.

Nick 'squash guru" Griffiths had the best win of his illustrious career beating coach and former world ranked player Brian Barnett who is now a top B1. Nick kept the pressure on throughout with great attacking squash and came back from behind in the fourth game to win 3-1. Nick will be only 5 points off B1 after the victory so a great result.

No less impressive next up was the new svelte Ryan 'wrecking ball' Quinn who beat Tom Watt 3-1 in a great exhibition of power hitting. Tom is a top ranked B2 who has only lost a couple of matches in the last three years.

Adam 'walloper' Watton had a fairly straightforward 3-0 over Tony Forde and showed the benefits of playing through summer.

Rob 'where is his mind' Drent almost made it hard for himself blowing a 10-2 lead in the fourth game to eventually win it 15-13 and take the match.

So a great first up 12 pointer.

No pressure on Bruce 'the ref" Stewart when he returns to the fray next week!

M9 Final game report

Well the night was full of pressure and the air was tense and we knew we had to go well to take the pennant.

Ollie lead out and secured our first 3-0 win and we were off to a flying start with Ollie clearly enjoying his game which he played and won with confidence.

Next up was Jason who had a slightly tougher battle but also secured a 3-0 win with a determined display.
Lucas played at three and played his normal exuberant approach and dominated the court never, ever giving up on a shot.

Last up was Tom and getting value for money went to five. Toms opponent had an unusual style which saw Tom finally going down 3-2.

The outcome. Well we were one point behind Maramarua going into the evening and my spies at North Shore informed me they drew 9-9. So with our 11 and Maramarua only getting 9 we came out winners topping the table with 66 points and Maramarua one point behind on 65.

Well done to all players throughout the two rounds of winter interclub. All have contributed to secure another pennant win for Devonport and the most unusual situation where we were promoted a division and still won the pennant.

Go the Devonport Blue Bombers!!

Interclub M10 Match Report 29 May 11

A convincing win over our local rivals Belmont 12 - 4

Another very convincing win over our local rivals Belmont 12 - 4 which will ensure we remain ahead of Royal Oak and now starting to feel sure we will move up a division for the next round. Not sure if that suits me but Oliver and Lucas are keen.

Results:

Oliver 3/2 (+10 points)
Laurie 3/2 (+10 points)
Lucas 3/0 (+10 points)
Jason 3/0 (+20 points)

Highlights:

I think, if I may say myself, after four weeks of losing in 5 games Laurie finally winning his first game for the year is the highlight. However, he did once again get great value for money by once again going all the way to 5 games. Jason displayed great patience producing a good win and continues to creep up the grading list with D2 in his sights. Oliver was tested for the first time in a few weeks and was taken to 5 but once again showed the advantage of excellent fitness. Lucas, once again, displayed that he will run everything down and you can never assume you have played a winner as he never gives up on a shot. He too is creeping up the grading list and only a few points shy of D1.

Master 2 Match Report 1 june 11

A great effort by Devonport Master's one going down 11-8 against the highly ranked Papakura last night .

Papakura had a team of a B1, two B2's and a C1, while we had four C1's - so to take a match and five other points was a great effort. Ryan "wrecking ball" Quinn showed great form taking a game 9-0 off B1 Len Brennan and looks set to rocket up B2 - hopefully after a stellar career in the Devonport C grade champs team. Rob "where is his mind" Drent had one of his 'on' games against John Tulp but John just wouldn't stop running and Rob lost an epic battle 3-2 in a match that went over an hour. Dietmar "lethal" Londer had perhaps the strangest match of the season. He was up 8-1 in the first two games against Russell Padmore and lost those. But he put that behind him and won the next two and was up 7-3 in the fifth only to lose the match. Squash is a tough game mentally and physically! So it was left the Bruce 'the ref" Stewart to bring a bit of honor to the team beating Greg Hayhow in five but not without a bit of the usual noise and self abuse although he was well behaved towards the ref.

Interclub M10 - Match Report

Well another awesome night with Devonport M10 (Devonport Blue Bandana Bombers) having a hard fought win at 11 - 6 against Herne Bay.

Results:

Oliver 3/0 (+5 points)
Laurie 2/3 (-30 points)
Lucas 3/1 (+30 points)
Jason 3/2 (+50 points)

Once again some great highlights. Unfortunately Laurie lost but managed to secure two valuable points losing in the 5th 18/16. Ollie easily disposed of his opposition with a powerful display of length and good touch. Jason despite being 2/0 down pulled it back and defended several match points to win in the 5th using good length and the old "never give up" attitude. Lucas had a tough battle on his hands and although rattled by a more experienced player managed to secure a 3/1 win.

Interclub M10 - Match Report

Well an awesome night with Devonport M10 (Devonport Blue Bandana Bombers) winning 12 - 3 against Warkworth.

Results:

Oliver 3/1 (+10 points)
Mike 3/2 (+50 points)
Lucas 3/0 (+30 points)
Jason 3/0 (+30 points)

Highlights from the night would be Mike being down 2/1 in the game score and in the 4th down 14-8 and pulled it back to win 17-15 defending 6 match points which is a mean effort and then went on to win the 5th.

Jason was focused throughout and played awesome length. Ollie ran their young guy into the ground and Lucas played controlled squash with good movement around the court.

A good dinner which I think was well enjoyed by Warkworth who were in no hurry to leave and although we finished games at 9.30pm no one left until after 10.45.
